Acer Aspire 5738DG-6165 Review
The ‘Acer Aspire 5738DG-6165’ incorporates 3D panel into a mainstream laptop. The 3D approach used in the Acer Aspire utilizes polarized lenses. With the combination of the TriDef software, the Oakley shades and the polarized panel, the complete setup works perfectly. If you enter into the main interface of the program, you will be able to open precise video files of 3D that are outstanding.
The software adds depth to the movies that you insert into the DVD drive which is internal and a slider allows you to make adjustments in the 3D functions. Also, the 3D effect works reasonably well with your video files on the system. The AVI and WMV clips run very well, but you might observe some minor problems with recorded TV shows on ‘Windows Media Center’ and QuickTime videos.
The 3D effects can be inserted to the video from ‘Hulu streaming’ and ‘Netflix Instant Access.’ A person from the TriDef Company stated that the developers have to create plug-ins and drivers that can work inside the programs for the software to provide 3D functions. Also, Netflix has been integrated into the ‘Media Center’ and Hulu features desktop software, so the developers need to think seriously about it. The software’s menu displays an icon which will launch a photo viewer in 3D.
The sample images are adjusted to come out of the screen but this feature works extremely well with images. Gaming is excellent with 3D effects. But reading the text present below is not very comfy. Drivers are present which adds more life to 3D for some games while the results are mostly hit and miss. There are chances of running into the support forums of TriDef while finding the recent hack drivers created by the other people. Testing a game is difficult.
The laptop is 15.6 inches wide and the screen is clear and bright. With normal 2D content, the experience is average but provides great color reproduction. The images possessed deep, rich shades of blue and fiery, bright shades of red and orange. The video clips taken for test had a native resolution of 1366*768 pixels. If you use the clips streamed off Hulu or the HD video installed in the hard drive, there are no major causes to be worried of.
The screen is not so good since the screen has to be kept at an angle of 1200, otherwise the 3D effect cannot be experienced to the max. If you are not wearing the polarized specs, then the screen is being used in 2D mode and you will invariably view the panel lines which is somewhat distracting. The primary features of the laptop are a hard drive of 320GB, a 2.2GHz Intel Core processor, ATI Radeon mobility GPU and a RAM of 4GB.
The display screen has a resolution of 1024*768 pixels with high settings but the number of frames generated in a second varies from 28-37. The laptop is not really a gaming machine. The battery consumes lot of power and the battery lifetime is just two hours and 28 minutes. So you need to keep the AC adapter with you if you are planning to buy this device. The keyboard is nice with flat, wide keys. An entire number pad is also available.
The Acer has fully utilized the space and made the keyboard quite big and also has added some shortcut buttons at the top. The multi-touch touch pad has sufficient space. The mouse consisting of a single bar is not acceptable even though it is wide and large since it feels slightly plastic and cheap. The laptop features VGA and HDMI video outputs, a Webcam, a 5-in-one flash card reader, 2 headphone jacks and four USB 2.0 ports.
For audio purpose, you have to connect the headphones even though there are on-board speakers which do not generate shrill sounds completely. For connectivity, you have Ethernet, Bluetooth, an old modem port and 802.11n. Overall, the Acer laptop has attractive features primarily being the 3D panel which makes it a must buy for everyone. The price is also quite affordable.
