Introduction:

Light therapy is a new concept to treat many disorders of different kind. This new way of treating the disorders embraces finding the solution from jet lag to seasonal depressions. This therapy is very effective and also easy to carry out. A few mild side effects are noticed. Now let’s know about this therapy in depth.

About light therapy:

Light therapy apes the natural light which is obtainable outdoors and which is used to refurbish the usual rhythms of the body and also helps in overcoming a variety of mood turmoil. In this light therapy a unique light is used which emits brighter light than the one which is used as a household lamp. Most of these light boxes emit brighter light which is exaggerated than the distinctive outdoor light, so only a tiny session of revelation of this light is very much effectual.

Why is it used?

This therapy is used to replicate the outdoor, natural light. This helps in maintaining the natural rhythm of the body. If there is lack of this natural light then the body’s natural rhythm is disturbed and thus leads to disorders like SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and depression. This light therapy is also useful in treating the conditions like post partum depression, jet lag and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Light therapy can even help people who are working in shifts in maintaining their sleep cycle.

Risks in light therapy:

There are certain risks even in this light therapy. Albeit these risks are mild, they have some side effects too viz. nausea, headache, fatigue, agitation and irritability. Most of these are resolved by themselves within days of beginning of treatment of light therapy. If these side effects are not resolved then one should curtail the exposure to light as much as possible. If any patient is suffering from bipolar chaos then this therapy will trigger it to turn into mania and will lead to suicides of depressed people. This is the major risk in this therapy. It’s better to take up the consent of a physician.

Advantages of light therapy:

If this light therapy should affect positively on the person whose having disorder then the light should be used at the same time daily. Its better to use that light box after getting up everyday. 15mins session is enough for the beginners and gradually can extend up to 30mins to 2hrs. The consistency of light box has to be maintained. If this therapy is skipped by a day then it’s not at all productive. This light box has to be kept on the table near the user and then reading can be carried out or TV can be watched. This therapy is not a cure for every mood muddle but helps in reducing the symptoms and relieves the person a bit.
