Sonos wireless music system is one among the most preferred gadgets right now. The only issue for many people to give it a second thought is the price. However, there is no need to worry as the manufacturer has come up with a free app, workable on both Apple iphone and iPod touch. The free app eventually stubs out the purchase of expensive Sonos controller.

Continuous efforts are being made to test whether the app is competent enough with the stand alone Sonos controller.

As soon as you’ve located and installed the app, you will have to configure it to work properly on your system. Don’t get afraid by the idea, as it is quite simple. After you open the application you will be intimated with two options; one to add the application to your system or use the application to configure your system for the first time. My personal suggestion would be to first configure your system using your PC and then add the app as this is relatively quick.

Various options like including music library, radio (internet radio too), playlists, line in and settings will appear on the home screen. The option that you will be using most of the time is radio, external services and music library.

The music library is pretty much similar to the standard iTunes library having options like artists, genres, imported music and playlists, tracks and albums. The navigation in the system is much easier than the actual Sonos controller as there is less number of buttons to deal with, thanks to the touch screen feature.  The radio option allows you to choose and listen from a huge list of 25,000 radio stations around the world and as intimated earlier the navigation is very simple. You can choose individual source for different rooms to listen radio in one and mp3’s in the other.

Web based services such as last.fm, Pandora, Napster, SIRIUS and Rhapsody satellite radios are also allowed to be accessed using Sonos app.  There are various limited period trial offers from various providers to choose from.

The option related to system settings allow you to add or change various thing on your system, like music sources can be switched, playlists can be created and added, system update or help desk facility.

The main advantage of having the app rather than the controller itself is that the app can be carried around in your pocket and free too. So, there’s no need to purchase the controller, if you have an iTouch or iPone.
