Sony Ericsson and the T-Mobile have joined together to release a new mobile phone, Equinox TM717. Similar to its forerunner, the Sony Ericsson TM506, the Equinox is a sleek, flip phone that supports 3G network of the T-Mobile. The TM717 mobile is available at a price of $49 along with the T-Mobile’s “Even More” plan or an “Even More Plus” plan for $149. The phone has its dimensions, 3.7×2.0×0.6 inches and possesses a spectacular design.

The color of the phone is glossy black and the casing is sensitive to fingerprints since it is reflective in nature. The phone’s back side is composed of a material of smooth touch which offers a firm grip. The phone has a 2.25” display which is internal and large and it supports 262,144 colors with a resolution of 320×240 pixels. The mobile has an attractive display with rich, bright color shades and fine graphics.

The brightness of the display and the size of the clock can be changed by the users. You can also set off the light which will glow indicating the incoming call. The display that is external is very tiny and not at all useful because of its faint backlight. The display presents the signal strength, numeric caller ID and time. It fails to show the photo caller ID and the date. Also, the phone cannot operate as a ‘viewfinder’ to the camera.

The keypad buttons and the navigation array is lustrous, which does not provide a firm grip. A small volume rocker, only one port for the charger and the headset is the drawback of the phone. That is, you need an adapter to use both the accessories together in case you desire to use a 3.5mm headset which is the standard one. The phone provides a Memory Stick Micro card instead of a microSD card which is a standard and is used widely.

The main features of the Equinox are an IM, vibrate mode, phone book of 1,000 contacts, text messaging, timer, multimedia messaging, speakerphone, calculator, stopwatch, alarm clock, to do list, calendar and notepad. In addition, the cellphone provides enhanced features like Bluetooth, voice recording, FM Radio, gesture control, Wi-Fi, file manager, integrated GPS with geo-tagging capabilities, code memo, PC syncing, music player, USB mass storage and a 3.2-Mega pixel camera with video recording capabilities.

The Equinox TM717 provides a talktime of ten hours, a 3G talktime of four hours and a standby time of 16 days. To sum up, the cellphone is great with its enormous amount of features though a few features need to be enhanced.

Samsung Equinox is equipped with enhanced design features along with integrated GPS sensors for turn –by-turn directions. It supports 3G technology with which it is possible to have data and voice traffic simultaneously.
You can easily shoot videos & transfer it to computers via email or upload it directly to the YouTube application.

    Advantages are:

    • Decent Photo quality
    • Excellent video playback.
    • Support Goggle Maps & TeleNav.
    • Decent Call quality

    Disadvantages are:

    • Mediocre Web and Camera capabilities
    • Average Speakerphone quality.
    • No Q-W-E-R-T-Y keyboard.
    • Poor user interface.
    • You cant connect headset & charge phone at same time.

    Summary
Though Samsung Equinox has average camera , web qualities and without any email service, the only thing that lets drives you to purchase this phone is its look (flap phone) and its price.
