Sony Ericsson Elm Preview
The new eco-friendly phone from Sony Ericsson is expected to be launched in second quarter of 2010. It is a fairly conventional phone whose slot will be mostly in the upper mid range market. What separate from other mobile in the market is their environmental credentials. Although most of the mobiles are environmentally unfriendly mostly due to the exotic materials they are made from. Sony Ericsson Elm also called as the elm green heart is the second of its type from the manufacturer.
The company promises the phone will be featured with dedicated application for social networking but it is unavailable in the prototype. With its color combination it has definitely good chance to be a hit among ladies. There is a program called walk mate that provides insight on how many steps you have made in a given day.
Design
The mobile comes with a back panel with specific curve as it can be held easily in your hand. The design looks much similar to its sibling Hazel but completely different from any of its family. Its body is made from Cyro plastic which is eco-friendly. The candy bar phone will be launched in metal black and skin colors in a way suitable for ladies.
The phone features a 2.2-inch TFT color screen for viewing and large enough for all social networks like Facebook, myspace and youtube. The QVGA resolution screen however doesn’t have the clarity that of C901. The sunlight legibility and the contrast are however disappointing.
Elm comes with a normal alpha-numeric keypad made up of plastic and provides smooth touch. The weight of the phone is uniformly distributed which adds boost for comfortable typing. The left side of the phone has a USB connection slot and the right side is enabled with a volume rocker. The backside of the phone has a camera lens, LED flash light and a loud speaker.
Multimedia
Sony Ericsson elm is loaded with an awesome 5MP camera along with autofocus, LED flash lights, face and smile detection. It has a maximum resolution of 2592×1944 pixels. The camera and the video options are very similar to the Sony Ericsson hazel. The macro mode give you the option of taking pictures even when close at 10 cm. Pictures takes with the prototype is good but not to the 5MP mark. It is for sure Sony Ericsson will tune up when the mobile is launched.
Video recording is possible and it did surprise with VGA resolution 30fps. Note that 30 fps is to quality of iPhone video quality. The maximum recording of video is possible up to 7MB for every clip. Video quality is definitely promising and once it is retail it will come to truth.
The Music Player version is 4.0 as in the case of most Sony Ericsson Walkman mobiles. Various player styles and themes are available in the store from which one can download. Sony Ericsson Elm offers good sound clarity and intelligent volume adoption. It comes with a 3.5 mm audio jack
Local and Wide area connection.
Local connectivity of the phone is enabled with a help of Bluetooth and a micro USB of manufacturers proprietary. The USB port is not a standard one. It is disappointing that the USB port has no cover. It creates the pain of cleaning it often. It is a cool thing that it supports WiFi and fast 3G connectivity. The browser is developed by access and it is really capable. Unfortunately it does not have built in flash support but one have the option of playing youtube videos with a pre-installed application.
Battery unit life
The phone is charged through a manufacturers proprietary. It is not a standard USB port at all. It gives a standby time of 430 hours and up to 9.5 hours talk-time. However the battery unit life depends upon the usage of the multimedia.
Final words would be that the phone is a treat for the eco-friendly lovers. Maybe it would not harm the environment as much as other phones but will harm for sure. With its unique design is sure to attract the ladies. There is no official release of the cost of the phone, but Sony Ericsson claim it to be affordable. It is the cost that is going to decide its future.
